Mary Jane Cole was the fonder of the Sinking Creek Film Celebration; established in 1969, it is the oldest continuous film festival in the American South. (Now it is known as the Nashville Film Festival) Mary Jane worked tirelessly to promote the cinematic experience through education in film production, the exhibitions of film, and the celebration of the cinematic artist. In our eyes, she is the Godmother of American cinematic culture.
SOAPIFF gives out three awards in Mary Jane Coleman’s name each year. The first award goes to an individual who promotes and/or encourages film production in the American South. The second award goes to an organization that works for the advancement of film art. And the third award goes to an Artist who has a consistent body of intriguing and note worthy work.
